A practical guide for Kenyan operators

What to look for in ISP billing software in Kenya.

The right platform should help you answer everyday questions: who has paid, which package they own, whether the router received the change and what the customer should do next.

    01

Start with the internet service you sell

Hotspot customers often buy short access periods from a captive portal. Home and office broadband customers typically use recurring PPPoE plans. An estate Wi-Fi operator may need both.

Compare how a system handles each complete journey, from package publication to payment, authentication, expiry and renewal. A feature name on a landing page tells you less than a test on the equipment you will use.

    • Hotspot package and portal management
    • Recurring PPPoE subscriptions
    • Customer support and payment history

    02

Understand the full cost of collection

Ask which charges belong to the billing platform, the payment provider and any settlement service. Check the difference between a percentage charge, a per-subscriber rate and an optional add-on.

For M-Pesa or another collection method, establish who owns the merchant credentials and where the money settles. An illustrative payout should identify its assumptions and every deduction instead of presenting a single unexplained balance.

    03

    Test the network behaviour

A successful login does not by itself prove DNS, routing and internet access. Test a customer device after signup, after suspension and after renewal.

During MikroTik onboarding, check backups, protected management access and customer-port assignment. If you already use RADIUS, identify which system holds your account secrets and package policies before migration.

    Use the MikroTik setup guide

    04

    Give customers a recognisable service

Choose a portal that explains packages clearly on a phone. Put your business name and support details where a customer can find them before and after payment.

White-label ISP software should make branding and commercial ownership understandable. Review custom-domain charges and setup requirements alongside the standard workspace and portal experience.

    05

Ask for evidence that matches the claim

A demo can show an interface. A simulated test can validate an expected workflow. A live provider transaction or an actual router acknowledgement establishes a different kind of evidence.

Before launch, agree on a small acceptance checklist using your payment provider, router model and a test customer. Keep the outcome and any remaining dependencies visible to the people operating the network.

    Good questions. Clear answers.

    Let’s clear
    a few things up.

A little clarity goes a long way.

    Ask us something else
    What is ISP billing software?

It connects customer accounts, internet packages, invoices and payment records with the network actions needed to grant, limit or suspend service. The supported access methods and devices differ between platforms.

Is Hotspot billing the same as PPPoE billing?

They can share payments and customer management, but their connection journeys differ. Hotspot normally starts at a captive portal; PPPoE uses a subscriber login from customer equipment.

What should I test before accepting live customers?

Test portal availability, payment verification, account installation, real browsing, expiry or suspension, renewal and the customer messages you plan to send.
